Zurich fields only six ranked hotels, but every one holds MICHELIN Keys, one at three keys and three at two, an unusually high proportion for so small a market. Baur au Lac has stood in its own private park where the Limmat meets the lake since 1844, a family-run house at the end of Bahnhofstrasse; La Reserve Eden au Lac reworked a 1909 belle epoque building on Utoquai, with Philippe Starck reimagining its interiors as an imagined yacht club.

Uphill, The Dolder Grand combines a half-timbered 1899 curhaus with a large modern spa and art collection on the Adlisberg, reached by its own funicular. In the medieval centre, Widder Hotel joins ten linked houses in the Augustiner quarter and Storchen sits directly on the river.

Where to stay in Zurich

The lakefront strips either side of the Limmat outflow, Sechselautenplatz and Utoquai, hold the grandest addresses and the Bahnhofstrasse shops; the Altstadt lanes around Rennweg and Weinplatz put river frontage and guild houses underfoot; and the Adlisberg hillside above the city offers forest, quiet and a longer commute in.

When to go

Demand holds high year-round in this market and rises further during the June to August lake season and the autumn business and trade calendar; the shoulder weeks of November and early spring are the most open, and December draws ski traffic passing through.
