Gstaad's four ranked hotels all hold MICHELIN Keys, one at three Keys and two at two, and one is recognised by La Liste. Gstaad Palace has stood on its hilltop since 1913, still family-run, its turrets visible from most of the valley floor. The Alpina Gstaad opened almost a century later on the Alpinastrasse above the village, built in a heavy timber and stone chalet register with a large spa.

Le Grand Bellevue sits on the edge of the pedestrian Promenade in the centre, and Ultima Gstaad works a suite and chalet model nearby. All four sit in the Saanenland, a broad German-speaking valley of working farms rather than a purpose-built resort.

Where to stay in Gstaad

The Promenade, closed to cars through the village centre, is the social axis, with the shops, the church and the funicular to Wispile at either end; the hillsides at Oberbort and along the Alpinastrasse hold the largest properties and the best views; Saanen, Schonried and Gsteig, a few minutes out, are quieter working villages with their own lifts.

When to go

Christmas, New Year and February are the busiest and most social weeks of the winter, when the valley's regulars return; July and August bring hiking and the Menuhin Festival concerts in Saanen church; almost everything closes in November and for a stretch after Easter.
