La Mamounia is a 206-room grand hotel in Marrakech, Morocco, directly opposite the Koutoubia Mosque. Its story begins with an 18th-century orchard of 13 hectares, later developed into a hotel that combines Moroccan architecture with Art Deco. The setting remains central to its appeal: gardens, fountains, shaded terraces, and birdsong provide a counterpoint to the city beyond the gates. A renovation led by Parisian architects Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku refreshed the ground-floor spaces in phases through September 2023, adding contemporary detail without erasing the palace character.

Dining is unusually substantial for a hotel, with four restaurants spanning traditional Moroccan cooking, Italian and Asian specialties, and L’Italien. A Pierre Hermé tearoom, new wine cellar, and pool pavilion add useful range rather than decorative excess. The spa is reached by a lantern-lit staircase and includes a hammam, making wellness here a distinctly Moroccan proposition. Service begins with a welcome drink and Pierre Hermé sweet and savory delicacies, then settles into the attentive, formal rhythm expected of a grande dame. With three MICHELIN Keys and a sixth-place finish in The World’s 50 Best Hotels in 2023, La Mamounia suits travelers who value ceremony, architecture, gardens, and a full-service stay over minimalism.
