Across from Nijo Castle in Kyoto, Japan, HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO occupies the former estate of the Mitsui family’s Kitake branch. Opened in 2020, the 160-room Luxury Collection hotel treats its setting as more than an address. Akira Kuryu shaped the architectural concept, André Fu designed the lobby and rooms, and Shunsaku Miyagi composed the central garden, organized around a substantial cherry tree. The result is contemporary and measured, with historical reference carried by the site rather than theatrical ornament.

Dining is anchored by TOKI, an innovative Kyoto French restaurant led by Tetsuya Asano, while FORNI provides Italian cooking. Restaurant and bar spaces face the garden, and Shiki-no-ma, rebuilt in solid cypress as a contemporary version of part of the former Mitsui residence, serves private gatherings and dining. Below ground, the Thermal Spring Spa draws natural hot spring water from beneath the property, with onsen pools and treatments. Staff work in suits and kimono and remain discreetly available. This is a strong fit for travelers who value architecture, bathing, and polished service, with Nijo Castle immediately across the street.
