San Sebastian's four ranked hotels all hold MICHELIN Keys, in a city better known for its restaurant density than its hotel supply. Hotel Maria Cristina opened in 1912 on the bank of the Urumea, in the Belle Epoque style the Spanish court brought with it when it summered here, and it remains the centre of gravity during the September film festival.

Akelarre takes the opposite approach: a small hotel on the wooded slopes of Monte Igeldo west of the city, with the Bay of Biscay below and Pedro Subijana's long-established restaurant on site. Lasala Plaza Hotel sits by the port at the edge of the old town, and Hotel Villa Favorita keeps an adults-only villa near Miraconcha.

Where to stay in San Sebastian

The Parte Vieja, between the port and the Bretxa market, is the pintxos quarter and the loudest place to sleep; the Centro and Gros, on either side of the Urumea, are more residential and put the Kursaal and Zurriola surf beach nearby; Monte Igeldo and the Miraconcha road west of La Concha give height, sea views and a short drive into town.

When to go

July and August fill the beaches, and the film festival in late September and the Semana Grande week are similarly tight; spring and autumn are wetter but far easier for restaurant tables.
