Merida's four ranked hotels all hold MICHELIN Keys and all are small, which fits a city whose luxury supply is built from single houses rather than towers. Hotel CIGNO, Hotel Sureno, Decu Downtown and TreeHouse Boutique Hotel occupy restored colonial and early twentieth century buildings in and around the Centro, most of them arranged around a planted courtyard and a narrow pool for the heat.

The city's wealth came from henequen fibre, and its legacy is the run of French-influenced mansions along the Paseo de Montejo, a few blocks north of the cathedral. Merida also functions as the base for the Puuc route and the cenotes and haciendas of the surrounding Yucatan.

Where to stay in Mérida

The Centro Historico, within a few blocks of the Plaza Grande and the sixteenth century cathedral, holds the courtyard hotels and puts the markets and cantinas on foot; Santa Ana and Santa Lucia just north are quieter residential grids with the best small restaurants; the Paseo de Montejo is the grandest address and the easiest walk in the evening.

When to go

November to March is dry and comparatively cool, and it is the busiest window of the year; April and May are intensely hot, and the rains and hurricane risk from August to October make for the quietest months.
