The four ranked properties on the Izu peninsula all hold MICHELIN Keys, one at the three Key level, and all are ryokan rather than hotels. Asaba has been run by the same family for centuries at Shuzenji, its rooms arranged around a pond with a noh stage on the far bank where performances are still staged in spring and autumn.

Ochiairo occupies a set of registered timber buildings at Yugashima, deep in the valley of the Kano river, and Arcana Izu and Fugaku Gunjo take more contemporary approaches in the same wooded interior. All draw on the peninsula's hot spring water, the reason writers and Tokyo travellers have come here since the Meiji era.

Where to stay in Izu

The central highlands around Shuzenji and Yugashima, along the Kano river, hold the historic ryokan and the densest spring water, reachable by train and bus from Mishima in about an hour; the eastern coast at Ito and Atami is busier and closer to Tokyo, while the southern capes at Shimoda and Dogashima are the most remote.

When to go

Autumn foliage in November and the cold clear weeks of winter, when outdoor baths make the most sense and Mount Fuji is visible, are the classic times to come; New Year, Golden Week and Obon are the peaks, and the rainy weeks of June are the quietest.
